Cayuse Creek Ranch hosted the annual 2015 Cayuse Canter Distance rides on May 16 and 17, 2015.  The venue consisted of a variety of events, specifically:

  • 12 mile Set Speed competition
  • 30 mile Set Speed competition
  • 6 mile Ride ‘n Tie and
  • 50 mile Endurance race

canterAll events were sanctioned by the Ontario Competitive Trail Riding Association (“OCTRA”).  OCTRA is the sanctioning body for most of the competitive distance rides held in Ontario and Quebec.

The trails were through all three sections of the Ganaraska forest and offered a variety of all kinds of trails, from narrow single track trails, double track trails, farmer’s fields and some gravel roads.  The weather was warm and humid, making it a challenge for both horses and riders.

Ride results for all can be seen at  The results from the Leaderboard for the Endurance race can be seen at:

Distance riding is the most popular of all competitive equestrian sports, based on the number of competitors.  The entry level is the 12 mile graded Set Speed events, where competitors compete against a standard rather than each other.  This venue allows for the rider to gauge the level of his/her horse without direct competition.  The longer Set Speed rides are recommended for those whose horses have proven themselves on the shorter ones.  We encourage recreational riders to come out and try their hand at the Set Speed rides.

The Organizing Committee (Bob Coleman, Michelle Bignell and Chrystal Woodhouse) wish to thank everyone who competed, volunteered and visited.
